I love boxes such as you describe, and have a surprising number of wine cases that have been repurposed around the house as things like (small) shelves and occasional tables.
I have a wooden box with partitioned sections that are just the right size for reels of sewing thread. It has a sliding lid and I think I found it in the rubbish!
I had a whole sewing chest, with two wooden trays at the top, inside (fabric below), with partitions for reels of thread, and made-to-measure other sewing accessories. Chest made by my long-term partner and me. I gave it to my first landlady here in Portugal, as a token of our appreciation for all she did for us when we first arrived. She was very happy with all the little compartments in the trays.
